At the foot of Spain’s first National Park

Located in the foothills of the Eastern Massif of the Picos de Europa, it is visited every year in summer by thousands of tourists seeking peace and harmony in the natural environment, or the adventures offered by the valley and its great mountains full of magic and especially of history.

Activities such as canyoning, via ferrata, climbing, hiking, biking or horseback riding, paragliding, mountain biking or hiking are guaranteed.

The peaks of Picos de Europa act as a barrier and protect the valley from storms. When these fronts come from the south, they are trapped behind the peaks and the valley remains clear. Proof of this is the cultivation of vines, oaks and other plants more typical of the Mediterranean climate than of the Atlantic.

Before discarding your trip because of bad weather, try to make sure of it, you will be surprised how many times they indicate rain and it is totally clear.

Mediterranean microclimate

The fact that the valley is located at the low altitude of about 300m above sea level, coupled with the surrounding peaks (which in many cases exceed 2000 m) make this phenomenon occurs, which for many outdoor enthusiasts is a dream. Very mild temperatures, little rainfall and a magical setting: what more could you ask for?

The limestone rock that predominates in 90% of the valley is of the highest quality. At the same time we find a wide variety of sectors with different orientations that allow us to enjoy throughout the year.

Different styles of climbing: Overhangs, cracks, grip slabs, drips, small slides… make Liébana the perfect destination for this activity.

From this blog we want to make known the highest quality sectors of Liébana and other areas (such as Picos de Europa and the Desfiladero de la Hermida) along with their sketches with a description as elaborate as possible.

We thank the outfitters (mountain guides in the area, local climbers and GREIM) who do the work of re-equipping and maintenance, disseminate sketches and promote the protection of the sectors; their cleaning and maintenance and respect for the appropriate restrictions so that climbing remains a sustainable activity, always linked to the care of the environment and nature.
