Espolón Rojizo de Santa Ana

Guided climbs in Picos de Europa – Central Massif

The slender Espolón Rojizo de Santa Ana is located in the Central Massif, specifically on the north face of the Pico de Santa Ana, an important summit at an altitude of 2,600 meters.

This is an isolated place in the heart of the Picos de Europa, but close at the same time, which makes this activity a true 100% “piquista” mountaineering day for those who are looking for a quiet place, far from overcrowding and with a unique high mountain atmosphere.

Its originality, reddish rock quality and low technical difficulty make this climb a true delight for the senses.

This reddish rock spur is a perfect route for those looking for an introduction to the sea of rock in Picos de Europa.

Opened 1965 by P.Udaondo, R.Fernández and A.Benito.

Taking as a starting point the upper station of the Fuente De cable car, we will walk towards Veronica cabin by the comfortable track with hardly any slope, passing under the great walls of Peña Olvidada and enjoying a splendid view to the North where we can see the great wall of the Torre de los Horcados Rojos, the Pico Tesorero and the Lloroza lakes at our feet.

We will arrive at the point known as the Vueltona, here the path becomes narrower and we begin to gain height until we reach the junction of the Canalona and Peña Vieja, we will turn to the right to continue ascending until we reach the pass of the Canalona from where we will enjoy wonderful views of the Eastern Massif and all the Vegas de Aliva. Once at this point we only have to go up a little more to the Santa Ana pass, where we will prepare all the material and we can leave in the bivouac all the weight not necessary for the route. (Up to this point about 2 hours and about 700 meters of positive difference in altitude).

We will start at the base of the route descending with views of the great Jou de Los Boches, a spectacular and strangely lunar landscape, then we will have to go up some easy climbs to the foot of the spur. Once at the foot of the route, the necessary instructions for progression and safety will be given and we will begin the climb.

The climb consists of 4 pitches on exceptional rock and a maximum difficulty of IV+ up to the summit, once here the spectacle of the amazing views is again guaranteed.

After a snack and some pictures, we will start the short rope descent by simple but quite aerial steps that become easier and easier until we reach the bivouac where we will pick up our gear and start the return route by the same place we climbed.
