Espolón de los Franceses a Peña Vieja

Guided climbs in Picos de Europa – Central Massif

In the cliffs of the southeast face of the majestic summit of Peña Vieja, this great classic emerges, in front of the beautiful Puertos de Áliva through which meanders the Duje River, which divides the central massif from the eastern massif, and that we will have present throughout its route.

This route is one of the great classics of the central massif of moderate difficulty. Its difficulty should not be underestimated as it is a very long route with a good alpine high mountain atmosphere, generally good rock, spectacular aerial passages and quite a lot of atmosphere.

Opened on August 18, ’67 by the Frenchmen Forn and Trouvé.

The starting point for this activity will normally be the Refugio-Hotel de Aliva, since it is a very long activity and depending on the season, the cable car schedules are very tight.

We will leave the Refugio-Hotel of Aliva by the comfortable track that gives access to the Horcadina de Cobarrobres, in an approach of about 45 minutes we will be at the foot of the track. Once at the foot of the route, we will be equipped and given the corresponding safety and progression instructions to begin the climb.
The route is developed in 12 pitches of vertical climbing, after finishing the vertical climbing we will take a long channel on the right hand side where we walk and we will also find some easy climbing.

At the end of the channel we will continue in short rope to look for the edge of the ridge, once there, we will follow the ridge by means of climbs, flankings and skills, until we arrive at the summit of Peña Vieja (Up to this point approximately 7 to 8 hours).

At the summit, after having a snack and some photographs, we will descend by the normal route to the summit towards the Collado de La Canalona, from here we will continue descending to find the path that leads to Cabaña Verónica from the cable car, once there, we will only have to border Peña Vieja and Peña Olvidada until we reach the Horcadina de Cobarrobres and from there to the Refugio-Hotel de Aliva. (About 2 hours from the summit).
