• Approach: It takes about 3 to 4 hours to reach the refuge from the Pandebano car park.

In order to do this activity, the participant(s) must be used to doing high mountain routes of 1000 metres of positive difference in altitude and of more than 8 hours of duration.It is advisable to have previously done routes and ascents in Picos de Europa such as: Palanca, Peña Vieja, Horcados Rojos etc….

Bearing in mind that there are various ways of undertaking this ascent depending on the time of year and also on the preferences and physical conditions of the participants, you can consult with the guide before booking which is the most suitable way to carry out the activity.

Normally the meeting point for this activity is at the Urriellu valley shelter, although it can also be done during the day from Pandebano or after spending the night at the Jou de Cabrones shelter.

Day 1:

To get to the Urriellu hut we must take the road that goes from the village of Arenas de Cabrales towards Puente Poncebos, once in Puente Poncebos we take the turning off the road that goes towards the village of Sotres, before reaching the village in a very sharp left-hand bend there is a forest track on our right that we must take and after about 5 minutes driving it splits in two, we must take another right-hand turn towards Pandebano where our car park is located.

Note: When booking the activity, the guide will provide a contact telephone number for a 4×4 taxi for those who wish to hire one from Sotres to Collado Pandebano. Please bear in mind that the Pandebano car park has capacity for a certain number of vehicles and that depending on the time of year it may be busy. To avoid surprises, the most convenient way is to hire a taxi service, as it will tell us where we can park in the village of Sotres and we will not have to take our vehicle up a forest track.

From the Pandebano car park we take the path that climbs up to the pass, which is clearly visible at all times from the car park. Once at the pass we must cross it through the field and continue along the well-marked path, which will take us to the La Tenerosa refuge on our right, we leave the refuge behind and continue along the well-marked and signposted path that gradually climbs up to the Valleja pass, where we can see the imposing Picu Urriellu or Naranjo de Bulnes in the foreground.

From this point it remains to climb up to the shelter through a steeper part until you reach it.

Normally the meeting is at the Vega de Urriellu Refuge the day before the activity, around 7 pm. Once introduced, the guide will provide the participant with the necessary material, explain concepts and review the material needed for the activity. During dinner, which is at 8:00 p.m., we will be able to chat and discuss all kinds of doubts and we will talk about the schedule for breakfast and departure the following day.

This schedule varies depending on the time of year and weather.

Day 2:

From La Vega de Urriellu it is a beautiful approach, we will ascend to the top of the Corona del Raso, clearly visible from the Vega along the path that goes to the Cabrones shelter, here we will have spectacular views of the imposing west face of the Naranjo de Bulnes, Then we will reach the Areneras pass from where we will have views of the spectacular South East face of Torre Cerredo where we can see the route up. We will descend from here passing through a series of small holes and after climbing a small hill we will reach the South East base of Torre Cerredo (approximately 3 hours from the shelter).

After climbing a few metres on foot and at the first plinth, we will prepare ourselves with harness and rope for the ascent.

We will make a series of climbs until we reach the last part, where we will have a last climb of 3° with a good atmosphere towards the Cerredo hole until we reach its summit, this ascent is normally done in about 2 hours or a little less from the Base.

After having something to eat and taking some photographs of the summit, we will proceed to the descent, which is done by the same route as the ascent. We will arrive at the base in an hour, once here we will collect material and begin the return journey to the Urriellu valley by the same route as before, approximately two hours.
